6. Hyundai i10
It’s always nice to see the importance given by international car makers to India. Cars like Hyundai i10 are an example of it. It was specially made for Indian car market and it was globally launched here in India. In 2007, Hyundai positioned it between Santro and Getz. At that time it was very difficult for Santro to take on every possible rival alone as Getz proved to be a big failure and Hyundai needed an alternative. What an alternative i10 has proved to be. It’s been a successful contributor to Hyundai’s car portfolio. It continued the success legacy of Santro in India. In 2010 Hyundai launched the face-lifted version of i10 with kappa2 engine. It is been a hit till now in the Indian market and now it is positioned below i20 which replaced Getz. Next Gen Hyundai i10 has been a perfect competitor for its rivals including the king of its segment - Maruti Suzuki Swift. With this upgraded version, Hyundai will expect the sales records of i10 to get better.
This Kappa2 engine is very fuel efficient. Despite being a performer, the new i10 manages to give good fuel efficiency. Thanks to its lightweight construction it returns around12-13km/ltr in city while on highways it can return you a mileage of around 16km/ltr. With LPG and CNG expect its mileage to increase by 1-2km/ltr. Its 1.1L engine is more fuel efficient as it gives a mileage of around 14km/ltr in city and it returns around 17km/ltr on highways.
7. Maruthi Ertiga
The Maruti Ertiga is a seven seater compact MPV created by Japanese automobile manufacturer Suzuki. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is said to be the first LUV (Life Utility Vehicle). Unlike its competitors like the Toyota Innova, Chevrolet Tavera and Mahindra Xylo, this car is powered by a K-series 1.4 litre petrol engine. The production of The Maruti Ertiga proclaims to be from the R-III (R3) concept introduced by MSIL at the Indian Automobile Expo in 2010 in New Delhi. In addition, the name Ertiga comes from the word “Tiga" which means "three" in Indonesian while the R3 stands for the 3 rows. Therefore "Suzuki Ertiga" could be literally translated to mean "Swift with Three Rows.
As mentioned earlier, the Maruti Ertiga uses variable valve timing (VVT) technology that allows the change of fuel intake timing for continuous power generation thereby assuring maximum fuel consumption and lesser emissions. It has an ARAI certified mileage of 16 kmpl for the petrol model and 20 kmpl for the diesel model which makes this vehicle the most fuel efficient LUV in its series.
8. Hyundai i20
Hyundai i20 is a premium hatchback. It was launched in 2008, since then it has not been given any change. It was introduced in India to replace then struggling car, Getz. Hyundai wanted people to know i20 gradually and that’s why they sold it along with Getz, it was only in 2010 when Getz was discontinued from the market. At that time this was the only car which had fluidic design in Hyundai’s Indian family of cars. It is not as hit in the market as Swift or Polo but it has never disappointed Hyundai either. Now when every car of Hyundai is blessed with their fluidic design, they have decided to give this car also a face-lift. It stands in a segment which has one of the best designed cars like the new Swift, Polo, Punto and Fabia. All these cars look beautiful enough to attract buyers. No doubt, i20’s looks are somewhere outdated when compared to these newly launched cars. Hyundai knows it and that’s why the new i20 i-Gen sports a new look which will enable this car to give strong competition to others. Hyundai has all re-launched i20 and they are expecting this car to be as successful as others newly launched cars in this segment.
The 1.2L engine in this car returns a fuel efficiency of around 12-13km/ltr in city while it may vary from 15-16km/ltr on highways. Expect the 1.4L to return you a fuel efficiency of around 10-12km/ltr in city and on highways it can give you somewhere around 14-15km/ltr. It’s the diesel versionwhich will satisfy us, Indians. The car when driven on highways return a mileage of 17-19km/ltr and in city also it won’t disappoint you as one can easily get a fuel efficiency of around 16-17km/ltr.
9. Hyundai Eon
India is a country obsessed with mileage. It’s been truly said and all the auto manufacturers here in India value it. Every car manufacturer in India eyes this segment of cars. It’s the most populated segment in India and no body rules it better than Maruti Suzuki. That’s the reason why India’s best-selling car is Maruti Suzuki’s Alto, which is a fuel efficient car rather than a performer. Korean makers knew it from the beginning. To challenge the reigning champion, Hyundai is all set with their new car which is specially designed for India. This car is known as Eon. Hyundai introduced this car at a very competitive price starting from INR 2.69 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The all-new Hyundai small car has been positioned below Santro and will compete with the likes of base model of Chevrolet Spark and top model of Maruti Alto.
Fuel efficiency, this matters the most in this segment and that’s what makes Alto the choice of every Indian. Hyundai claims this car to return 21.1 kmpl. However, we found this car returns a mileage around 16 kmpl in city while on highways it can reach up to 18-19kmpl. Overall fuel efficiency will be around 15-17kmpl. In comparison to Alto its mileage is less by 1-2kmpl.Maruti’s k series engine also returns more mileage than Eon’s engine. Despite being lighter than Alto k10, Eon is unable to pass its fuel efficiency. This is the biggest drawback for Eon.
10. Hyundai Verna
The New Hyundai Verna is a perfect definition of style, luxury and power. Known for following a fluidic sculpture, the car redefines the harmonious blend of beautiful interior and sporty exterior. With the Verna, you seem to be riding on a natural rhythm of life that blends well with its adorable style and luxury and sporty look. The new Verna will definitely attract your attention by just its mere presence. Hyundai India has updated the Verna sedan, which now comes with host of comfort and styling features. The new models will now feature all-new headlamp units with integrated day-time running LEDs plus new set of alloy wheels. As far as interior is concerned, it comes with back-lit power window buttons plus steering mounted audio controls. The 5th change is that the sedan will now come with steel rim for the spare wheel instead of alloy wheel.
The Hyundai Verna provides some relief to the customer’s budget with its mileage of 15 -17 kmpl and the fuel tank capacity of about 43 Litres. However, the mileage, average and fuel economy differs as per the configuration of each variant.
11. Maruthi Alto 800
Maruti Alto is the most obvious and common recommendation from others if you are planning to buy your first car in India. This car has made Maruti Suzuki what it is today in our car market. For the past six years, Alto is the undisputed largest selling car in India. It’s the most trusted car ever in the history of Indian car market. Surprisingly, this car has managed to do so without any major up gradations for almost 12 years. Finally, Maruti has launched the second generation of this car ahead of the festive season in India. The rising competition from cars like Hyundai Eon made them to do so and frankly speaking; it was desperately needed. The aged appearance of this car was about to become a matter of concern for Maruti.
Maruti cars are known for their high fuel efficiency and Alto is on the top of that list. The new lighter Alto with taller gear ratios manages to give you a fuel efficiency of around 18km/ltr in city conditions while on highways it can give you a mileage of around 20-21km/ltr. The CNG variant is even more fuel efficient. On CNG the car will cost you almost similar to a bike which is very helpful in those cities where CNG is easily available. High fuel efficiency has always been a USP of Alto and this one is no different. ARAI claimed mileage of petrol version is 22.74 kmpl and of CNG version is 30.46 km/kg.
12. Mahindra Scorpio
‘Old is gold’, that’s a famous saying and it perfectly applies in the case Mahindra Scorpio. This flagship SUV of Mahindra introduced them to the modern world. Before Scorpio, Mahindra was only known for its MUVs which were limited to rural India only. Scorpio was the first vehicle of Mahindra which was designed for the global market. The car has proved to be one of the best SUVs ever launched in India. It took Mahindra a long time to showcase it but after its launch, Scorpio took no time and became the first choice of many SUV buyers. It’s been over a decade that people are familiar with Mahindra Scorpio yet it is still one of the best selling cars of Mahindra.
The 2.2L mHawk engine used in Scorpio is very fuel efficient. Despite car’s heavy weight and power packed performance, this engine manages to return a good fuel efficiency of around 8km/ltr in city conditions and around 14 km/ltr on highways. The other two engines also give almost identical fuel efficiency to the mHawk engine.
13. Maruthi Wagon R
WagonR is the second largest selling car of Maruti Suzuki in India. After Alto it’s the most demanded car by the Indian hatchback buyers. It was not one of those cars which get success instantly after their launch. It was launched in India in the year 1999 and people were not very much interested in car’s styling. It was awkwardly designed as it was the tallest hatch available at that time. Initial sales records also show that people took time to accept this car. At that time Hyundai Santro was already available in Indian market which also had a tall design but people found Santro to be much more proportionate in terms of styling in comparison to WagonR. Though after few years people started to rely on WagonR and since then it has never looked back. It has gone under three up gradations including the recent one. Now the competition has increased in the hatch segment and WagonR has to take on more competitors like Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo and its all-time toughest competitor Santro Xing. Unlike the previous two up gradations this time Maruti has made big changes including the all new chassis and engine for this new generation of WagonR. With this new WagonR Maruti aims to bridge the gap between Estilo and Ritz. A-star has not been able to do so and Maruti needs an alternative to fill this place. Will this ‘Blue-Eyed Boy’ (as Maruti promotes it) be able to live up to Maruti’s as well as people’s expectation?
Things just get better in this department. Even after getting heavier than before, it manages to return around 14km/ltr in city condition while on highways its mileage is around 17km/ltr. With CNG it becomes for fuel efficient as in city you can get a mileage of around 16km/ltr and on highways it can even reach 19-20km/ltr. These figures are capable enough to grab the attention of the buyers.
14. Toyota Innova
If we talk about Toyota in India, the first image that comes to our mind is of Innova. Toyota is world’s largest auto manufacturer and fifth largest in India. Innova played a significant role to make Toyota reach this position. Innova is a flagship car from Toyota in India which replaced its legendary predecessor Quails in 2005. Since its launch, Innova is the undisputed champion in its segment. A segment of Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV), which is least known to Indians. For most of the Indians, Innova is the definition of multi-purpose vehicles and they believe it to be the only competition to itself. With nice looks, features, refined engines and low maintenance this car has managed to fight against every competitor of it.
The major reason why Innova is first choice of many Indians is its fuel efficiency. The petrol version of Innova manages to return a mileage around 9-11km/l in city whereas on highways it varies from 12-13km/l. In cities like Delhi where compressed natural Gas (CNG) is easily available, this car is very successful. The compatibility of this engine with CNG makes it a fuel efficient car. The diesel Innova is also very fuel efficient. Overall this engine manages to deliver around a mileage of 14km/l which is even better than some hatches.
